What I Saw At The Grocery Store Today

I went to my local Top’s grocery store today to get some BS Chicken Breasts to can. They were on sale for $ 1.99 a lb. I picked up a large package.

They also had frozen extra large cooked shrimp at $ 8.99. It was the same price I had paid in early 2021 which I thought was weird. So I went to the freezer case to get one or two. That is when I noticed that they had smudged off the best buy date on every package. That immediately warned me that they were old and out of date. I went through every package to try to find one that still had the date on it. There were none; they were all wiped off. I left without buying any. They are trying to get rid of old stuff and I was not paying good money for that. So watch your dates. I have seen this on cans too where the dates show they will expire in a couple of weeks. I saw it today on dried fruits also.

I am getting low on eggs also but it was $ 1.89 on sale for a dozen eggs. Then I noticed that I could get 24 Eggland’s Best eggs for $ 8.49. I walked right on by. I have two other places that I will look for eggs tomorrow. If I can’t get eggs for a decent price, we will eat powdered eggs.

As I perused the dairy aisle, I noticed that cow’s milk was almost non- existent but there was plenty of vegan or oat milk. A quart of heavy whipping cream or half and half was $ 6.49. Our yogurt aisle which is normally a huge part of a dairy aisle was getting low but all of a sudden there is a vegan section that has taken over part of it and it is well stocked.

The Beyond Meat section is growing and growing but the meat is getting low. Hopefully, you can read between the lines here. I wouldn’t want to say that this is being orchestrated!

They also had fresh berries B1GF that I would not feed to anyone. They had put the paper liners in the bottoms to soak up the juice. They were way beyond fresh.

The freezer cases were really lacking on pizzas and frozen snacks. Many aisles were not well stocked. There were holes everywhere.

I don’t even want to get into how high the prices have gone up just in the last 10 days. So many are ridiculous! I will not pay them.

Soon I will write about what you can do to try to save a little money at the market. That is if you can even find the food!

Are any of you guys seeing these same things in your area? I live very close to the second largest city in New York State.

Hi Precious. I was at Kroger yesterday and spent $69.xx. I looked at the meat, but didn’t get any. I will use what is in the freezer this week. I was trying to get ahead on buying a few things so that I won’t have to go to the grocery next week except to run in for stuff like lettuce and bananas. Like, I bought a big bag of apples and a big bag of cuties for fruit, stocked on milk, OJ and eggs. Also bought an extra loaf of bread. Activia yogurt was on the mega sale so I stocked on it also. I didn’t notice low stock on anything that was on my list, but I didn’t go down every aisle either.

Today I am going to go to Meijer and hit up the $10$10 get the 11th item free sale. I have a $20 credit from a prescription that will help defray the cost of what I get. I am still going to try to stay to my $100/week if I can, so I have the credit and $30 to spend. I will report what I see.

Hi Precious, me again. I did go to Meijer yesterday. I was able to get everything on my list. I didn’t notice any shortages in the aisles I went down. I looked at the meat but didn’t buy any. One thing I did notice was that there were more people in the store than usual. Most of them had the smaller shopping carts, and even the ones who had larger shopping carts had less items in them. So guessing people are buying less in quantity maybe? I will keep an eye on this when I am in the stores in the next few months and see if it continues. I was really happy with my run. I got 30 items, including some not on the 10/$10 sale. I paid 8.29 and saved 49.67. The price of milk was 2.79/gal and I had a .40 mailer coupon. There were the usual snack things I get on that sale like pretzels and Chex mix. The small bag of Oreos were included this time so I got several to use for desserts when our kids come for Thursday supper. Frozen vegetables are included on the sale and I always stock up on what I need then. This time it was mixed vegetables. I think a pound of frozen veggies for $1 is a bargain. It is the main reason I hit this sale.

I made a rare stop at the store yesterday for a few coupon deals. Every aisle was wiped out. Only Mexican cheese in the cheese aisle, 2 pkg of brats that were 2/3 the normal size for Johnsonville. If we have to live on eggs and the cow in the freezer so be it. I am over it as well.

I was at a Shop Rite a week ago. Everything looked good BUT that was a week ago, which in our inflation world means: ions ago! I wanted to buy canned tomatoes but the only ones they had left were salt free. I bought them anyway and will add my own salt (but they never taste right to begin with….we need that salt!) I have to go back food shopping this Friday and I am afraid of what I might see or not see. Ugh. Thankfully I live in a rural community. Most everyone on my road raises chickens so I’ll be able to get eggs and chickens to cook up. One of our dear friends sells beef on the side. A bit expensive but At least I know it’s fresh, healthy and good! People now are making videos and posting them to Tik Tok of all the empty shelves they see in the stores right now. What do you think is going to be next? Robberies? Stealing? Theft? What are they going to steal if the grocery stores have nothing left? They’re going to be aiming for people and their stock piles. Be careful. Be very very careful.
