A Buffalo Fish Fry

When we moved to the Buffalo area, I had no idea that fish fries were such a big item. However during Lent, almost every restaurant and take out place has fish fries on Ash Wednesday and on Fridays.

The first time we ordered one, I was in shock at how big the portions were for one individual person. Hubby and I would order 2 dinners and would each get a fish fry, 2 sides, a roll and butter, lemon wedges and tartar sauce. It soon became evident that it was way too much food. So we quit ordering the 2 fish dinners and just get 2 fish fries. And that is why we only eat a fish fry on the days we get them. It is plenty of food, almost too much. We have at times saved some for the next day. They reheat well.

We just finished our fish and it was so delicious!

Are your fish fries in your area this big?

Do you mean a fish fry like when an organization hold a fish fry, sort of like a pancake breakfast? No, I am not aware of fish fries here. Of course, people who come back from fishing have fish fries in the back yard.

From a restaurant? No, not aware of having fish fries.

You don't know what you are missing. This is a piece of fish they fry up- usually haddock or some other white fish. All of our restaurants have them during Lent and they are similar as to what is pictured.

Hi Liz, this is Chris. We like to go to fish frys during Lent. Check out your local Catholic church and see if they offer one. Our church here in Ohio has an all you can eat type fish fry. For adults it is $12, over 65 is $10. It includes all you can eat fried or baked fish, lots of sides to choose from, bread and cheese, cheese pizza, drinks (tea, lemonade or water) and dessert. We try to go a time or 2 during the season. Lots of the fast food places run specials on fish sandwiches also.

It’s funny you would blog about this, as I’ve been noticing signs for 2 of the Catholic Churches in my area having Friday night fish fry dinners. I looked them up and a dinner is $11. I’m thinking about asking my husband if he’s interested. Nothing better than deep fried anything covered in tartar sauce!

I live in Tennessee, and most local restaurants in my area serve catfish with all the trimmings (french fries, hush puppies, coleslaw and white beans) on Fridays. We also have a couple of our favorite restaurants that serve fish dinners daily. Fish fries, per se, are usually fundraisers for an organization. The fish in your pic looks delicious.

Hi Gayle,

Thanks for sharing. I love catfish. The thought of hush puppies has my mouth watering. YUM!

Thanks so much for sharing how they do it there. I am always interested in how people in different states do things.
