It Isn’t Christmas Here Without………………

We all have our favorites that we make during the holidays. One that we have made for all of our married years is Chex Party Mix. I got my recipe from my mother in law and I have been making it ever since. I know everyone’s recipe is a little different. But here is mine:

1 Box of Wheat Chex
1 Box of Rice Chex
1 Box of Cheerios
1 Bag of Thin Pretzel sticks
3 lbs. of Mixed Nuts( no peanuts- Hubby doesn’t like them)

2 cups of Canola oil
2 Tbsp. Worcestershire Sauce
1 Tbsp. salt (optional)
1 1/2 Tbsp. Garlic Salt

Combine the cereals, nuts, and pretzel sticks in a large pot. Blend remaining ingredients well. Then pour them over the dry ingredients mixing well to ensure equal distribution. Cover and bake 1 hour at 250 degrees. Uncover and bake for 1 hour stirring every ten minutes. Let cool and enjoy!

Our tips: Hubby makes a double batch of sauce. He likes it better that way. He blends the sauce in our Vitamix so that it blends really well. It is not a cheap recipe with the nuts Hubby wants but I try to plan in advance and watch for them to go on sale. This makes so much that it probably costs no more in the long run than buying snacks.

Many Christmases I have given a tin of this to family, friends and neighbors. Everyone ends up with the recipe because they ask for it.

The only things I have left to make this weekend are
two loaves of pumpkin bread and a batch of English Toffee. Then I will be ready for Christmas.

What is your favorite for Christmas that you always make?  In the spirit of Christmas, would you share with us?

Hi Liz, this is Chris. I make the sugared pecans. Here is the recipe:

1 lb pecan halves
1 egg white
1 c. sugar
1 t cinnamon
1 t salt
1 T water

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Mix egg white and water in large bowl with wire whisk until frothy. Add pecans and mix to coat. In small bowl, mix sugar, salt and cinnamon. Pour over wet pecans and stir to coat. Spread pecans in a single layer on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 300 degrees for 35-45 minutes, stir every 15 minutes. When done, cool pecans on wax paper.

I usually make 2 lb at a time. This year I made 12 lb of the nuts and got about 36 treat bags filled to give out. It is a lot of work, but people know I make them and love them.

Peanutbutter cups! Here you go: Line 36 mini muffin tins with paper liners. Filling: 1/2 cup peanutbutter (do not use natural) 3 tsp. softened butter, 1 cup powdered sugar, dash salt. Mix until smooth. Set aside. Chocolate: 2 cups (12 oz. pkg) semi sweet chocolate chips, 1 cup (1/2 of a 12 oz. pkg.) milk chocolate chips, 1/2 cup peanutbutter. Melt over double boiler.
Fill about 1/8 inch of each lined cup with chocolate. Add scant teaspoon of peanutbutter filling. Cover with more chocolate. Allow to harden. (I hasten this up by sticking them in the refrigerator.)
Merry Christmas.

Hi Meg,

Peanut Butter and chocolate is my favorite combo. These are making me drool just reading about them. I am saving this for my holiday recipes. Thanks for sharing with all of us.

Hi Hawaii Planner,

For some reason your link come sup and does not have the recipe. But that is fine. Don't worry. Just enjoy your holidays in Portland. And enjoy that cardamon bread.

I remember you writing about this in other years. I am going to put it in on my calendar and make it next year for friend gifts. I was looking for a good, non-sugar treat.
When you say double the sauce, did you write the recipe here with the amount of sauce you use, or should i double what you wrote?
About Disney, my daughter will be going around the first week of January with her in laws and the kiddos. I hope you all have a wonderful trip.

Hi Rhonda,

Sorry, I just saw this. Double the recipe. I didn't double it.

Looks like your daughter and I may be there at the same time. I am so excited to go.

I just came back to look up your recipe again.
Husband likes Aldi Party Mix but ours isn’t carrying it anymore.
I bought him a bag of Chex party mix, Bold flavor but it tastes like cereal with pretzels mixed in.
I’m going to get the ingredients to try yours. I’m glad you posted it.
And it think it would perfect for friend Christmas gifts this year.

Hi Rhonda,

It is so good to hear from you. You haven't posted in so long that I was worried about you.

We have used this party mix for over 51 years. Hubby grew up with it because his Mom always made it. We love it. Our children and grandchildren love it and so look forward to us giving them a big container of it at the Holidays. We make it twice a year when we have time. Once at Thanksgiving and once at Christmas. it is not cheap especially the nuts but it makes a lot. We do ours in a huge pot the size of a canning kettle.
