A Little of This and A Little of That

I went to Niagara Produce this week to get 4 dozen eggs to fill up my 5 dozen container in the refrigerator. They were still on sale for $.99 each. I also purchased fresh broccoli crowns( $1.49 a lb.) for $ 1.59 to cook as a side for a couple of dinners this week. I always check for marked down meat. While I was looking, I saw this package of on sale cheese and parsley Italian sausage. It was $3.99 a lb. so it cost $ 7.14. This will give us two homemade meals: a pasta one and a pizza one. My total was $ 12.69.

Then I went to Aldi’s to get sliced mushrooms for $ 1.29 for burgers this week and peppers($2.55) to make fajitas last night for dinner. I also got the flour tortillas for $ 1.95 for the fajitas. The organic ketchup was $2.15. The cantaloupe was $ 2.49 and the brioche buns were $3.99. I picked up 2 more butter at $2.89 lb. to add to my freezer stash. The frozen California Medley vegetables were $ 1.15. My total was $21.65.

I stopped at Panera Bread and purchased the dozen bagels Tuesday deal for $9.99 using my Panera giftcard that I purchased 3 to 4 years ago on the Top’s deal at Christmas. They give you 13 bagels so I got 7 asiago cheese and 6 cinnamon crunch. I froze most of them for future meals.

Top’s was my second to last stop. We rarely buy cereal but we do use Rice Chex in our party mix so I picked up 2 boxes on sale for $3.00 a box. The Kraft salad dressings were on sale for $ 3.00 each. We eat a lot of salads in the spring and summer so I am now stockpiled on dressings. The Skinny Pop was a treat for me. It cost $ 3.50. I got 2 Peter Pan peanut butter on sale B1G1F so it was $3.69 for 2 of them. We love this for a snack with celery. The Smithfield pork tenderloins were on B1G1F for $ 9.99 for both. We will cook these on the grill for a couple of meals this summer. The leftovers will get used in pork fried rice. The grapes were on sale for $1.88 a lb. so I paid $ 3.42 for $ 1.82 lbs. They will be used in chicken salad and for snacking. The bread was on sale for $ 2.99. I use this for French toast for my grandson and Hubby on Sundays when we are all together for breakfast. The cheddar cheese block was $ 1.88. My total for all was $ 37.47 minus my 6% senior discount of $ 2.25. So OOP was $35.22.

My last stop was at Consumer Beverage where I returned bottles for $6.00 which I used to defray the cost of a 24 pack of Yuengling Lager that cost $22.99 plus bottle deposits of $1.20 – $6.00 plus $ 1.84 in tax totaled $20.03. I am also submitting an $ 8.00 rebate. This is Hubby’s treat after he is done mowing the lawn.

We needed food so I finally had to go shopping. The only way I could get through it was to use a lidocaine patch. But I was totally exhausted when I got home.

I submitted a $6.00 rebate for 3 bottles of Kendall Jackson wine.

We have not turned on the A/C yet even though we have had a couple of 80+ days. Our home has high ceilings so we stay pretty cool in here. We also have ceiling fans in 2 bedrooms, a portable fan in the 3rd bedroom, and ceiling fans in the breakfast room, which is where we eat all of our meals, the great room, and the office. We have only had to use select fans a couple of days.

Our landscaper replaced the tree that died since he planted it last fall. It was under a year warranty. It is a nice red maple and is a bit bigger than the one that died. I pray that this one survives.

In the month of May, we had $ 1078.83 in extra income and rebates.

What have you been doing to save a few dollars?

Great Deals for sure! Not much in the way of sales lately (OM bacon was 3.99 today).
Paid off the RV so we are Debt Free again. Yahoo! Now to sell it which should be much easier with a title. One of my good friends may be interested so that would be optimal
I hope you are feeling better soon!

Hi Patti,

Thanks! That is a good price for bacon. I am starting to get low on that so on the lookout for a great deal. I an so happy that you are debt free again! There is nothing better in these times than the freedom of knowing that you owe no one. I wish you all the luck in selling it.

Hi Precious, you got some good deals. That sausage from NP looks really good. I got the same bacon deal Patti did when I went to Kroger. I was able to stay in my grocery budget, and had $1 left to start with for next week. LOL! We had chicken sausages from Costco for family dinner last night and I got some marked down salad, watermelon and ice cream for sides/dessert. We have the girls all day today and they want to go to the local splash pad. We are having happy hour with the neighbors later and I think everyone is going in on pizzas. It will be fun.

Hi Chris,

Thanks. Nice score on the bacon. I will be getting bacon this week for $3.99. We seem to go through and awful lot of it. Yoi did great on the expense of that family dinner. Enjoy the splash pad with the girls.
That happy hour and pizza sounds great. We went to our new neighbor’s home for Happy Hour and dinner on Saturday. Food and booze were wonderful. Socializing was the best part. They are the nicest people.

Our family is continuing on our journey to use it up. Almost all my samples from doctors and dentists are about gone. I’m so pleased we have not purchased any toothpaste, sunscreen, floss, make-up etc since January! We are going through our home and garage with a more keen eye and decluttering things we don’t really need or use. I am finding organization helps me remain more frugal by knowing what we have/don’t have. My shopping habits this month are only to buy necessities. Our repair list is getting smaller so I am trying to front load these repairs with cash instead of using our emergency fund. This past month we have replaced a broken blind, completed needed trailer repairs, fixed a vacuum, and replaced window screens. Next month, its tire replacement time! We take our time and research the best options.
Other than that, I continue to save my shower warm up water, utilize the library, close our blinds during the hot parts of the day, use our ceiling fans instead of the AC, monitor our food usage so no wastage, and creatively meal plan to use up older foods. My neighbor has been very generous with lemons this year, so I have been juicing and freezing juice for lemonade during the hot summer months. We will drink lemonade and water instead of soda at our family gatherings.

Hi smhuh,

I haven’t purchased most of the things this year either. That’s great that you are decluttering. I find the same that if I know what I have there is no waste. That is great that you are cash flowing repairs. It’s so freeing.
We have some screens to replace too. Was it a difficult job? You did great with all of those repairs.

You are doing great with all of your food saving. I really appreciate that you shared so that other people can learn from you. Thank you.

My husband did the job by purchasing the screen material and tool needed at a large home improvement store He has done them for years and I’m sure learned the tricks by watching youtube videos.

I also had issues with world press, for 2 days!

I loved all the deals, my favorite were the bagels, I will try that out. I have also scored with flash food at tops again! Everyone should try that out. They do charge a very small fee for the service, maybe 75 cents or so.

Hi Terre,

Yikes. So sorry that Word press was a problem.

Thank you. The bagels are good but not as good as before Panera was sold to a private equity firm. Every time I look for flash food at Top’s. There is none. You are lucky. I did not know they charged. Is this at all stores or just Top’s?

hi, As far as I know just tops does in my area, you can go to the app and put in your location and it will tell you where you can shop. There are about 7 local tops in my area and they will add items during the day so you can go put in an order then check to see if there is some else you might want. I have dairy issues and they had tops maragine for 88 cents as well as hot dog buns for the same amount. The produce boxes are the best, there is a store in fayetteville that loads the box up, there ha[[wns to be a Wegmans near by!

One trick I use for bacon is that I pull each piece to make it longer and I then cut them in half. By stretching the bacon like that it also strtches how far it will go, I liked the tip about not cooking it all the way,Thank for that,

Hi terre,

Thanks for the info on Top’s flash sales. I will look more often at my two stores that don’t take any arm and a leg in gasoline.

Nice trick on the bacon. I never cook it all the way unless I am going to eat it right away. The bacon goes from not done to overcooked in seconds. UGH!
