Things We Will No Longer Purchase

With prices constantly rising for food, personal care, and household goods, these are the things that we will no longer be purchasing.

Chicken legs: The one meal serving that we have left, I am throwing out. I know most people can get them for $.99 a lb. and under. However, there is barely any meat on them and the last package I bought the skin would not crisp up even in the air fryer. It makes me wonder what they are washing them with or injecting into them. So for our safety, I am tossing them.

Bread: I have a bread maker. I will use up the bread that I bought this week for French toast for family and that is it. Bread has gotten really expensive and the quality has gone down. Have you noticed that both hamburger and hot dog rolls and sesame rolls fall apart when you eat them with your meat? I have also noticed that any kind of bread except fresh from the bakery lasts for weeks. No mold! Why is that? I have found recipes for making hamburg and hot dog rolls so I will make my own.

Personal Care Products: Conditioner, toothpaste and floss( I get plenty of samples from the dentist.), nail polish, and body wash. My hair gets oily when I use conditioner. I use bar soap in the shower and bathtub. It is cheaper and lasts a lot longer. I find Ivory soap and Dove soap to be the best.

Magazines and Books: I can read current magazines at the library. I can borrow books and read them online through my library.

Fast Food: We go out to local restaurants with friends once a month. We can get a meal for just a little bit more than we would pay for fast food and the quality is much better. The fast food restaurants are not going to survive between their high prices, poor quality food, and expecting a tip now. When we are not out with friends we cook at home except for our anniversary and birthdays. The only exception is getting take out Chinese once in a while from our local restaurant.

Energy Drinks: They have gotten so expensive and I have decided they are not that healthy for us.

Some Laundry Products: I haven’t bought dryer sheets in years. We rarely use our dryer. I only buy laundry detergent and Oxyclean. I put a tablespoon of the Oxyclean in each load along with my liquid detergent. Any stains easily come out.

Candles: I always bought scented but I can’t tolerate the smells anymore. We also don’t want Eloise around them.

Movie Tickets: The last time I bought tickets was when Alexa was little and wanted to see a Disney movie. She is 19 now so that was many years ago. There are so many streaming services now that I get free through Spectrum that we don’t need to go out ever for a movie.

Wrapping Paper: I have a huge roll of brown paper that I use that for wrapping gifts.

Cleaning supplies: I still have some left but when they run out I will make my own.

We have quit buying seasoning packets and gravies. We make our own taco and fajita seasonings. Just search online and you can find recipes for almost any that you would buy.

We used to use a lot of paper towels. I replaced them with microfiber cloths. I use about 1-2 rolls a year just to drain bacon.

We have a bidet so we only use about a roll and a half of toilet paper a month. I was thinking about getting a bidet for the guest bathroom but we don’t have enough company during the year to make it worth the price.

That’s enough for today. I have a lot of work to do around here that got neglected while my back was hurting.

What are you no longer buying?

Prices continue to rise more and more. I take my homemaking role seriously and try my best to be a good steward of our finances by buying whole food products and making our own food.
I am no longer buying yogurt, bread products, spice mixes, cereal or soda. I am able to make all of the above except for the soda. We have lots of lemons juiced in the freezer and are enjoying lemonade instead. For any meat products, I am only buying loss leaders. My local Albertsons often has clearance meats when I shop. I vacuum seal into individual meals and freeze immediately.
I am no longer buying soaps or candles from the B & B store. I am finding the fragrances give me headaches. I use Dr. Bronner’s and mix it with water into a dispenser I purchased previously for soap. I do purchase beeswax candles if I can find a good deal. I do enjoy having a candle burning, particularly in fall and winter.
I too make my own cleaners with Dr. Bronners, or use a vinegar solution.

Hi smhuh,

I love that you make all those foods. As we are using up more and more of our stockpile, we are doing more scratch cooking. I do make our granola now. I will try yogurt again. We buy soda for Hubby. I do have zero sugar Fanta once in a while. But we do not buy as much soda as we used to. I gave up diet cola years ago. I tried it again the other day and I can not stomach it. It is too sweet.

I hear you on the meat loss leaders. We have been doing the same. You are so lucky to have an Albertson’s. When we lived in AZ, they had so many good deals.

Thanks for all your tips. You are helping all of us on here.

great list, I also get reduced fruit and veggies and dehydrate them also sweet potatoes for chips no oil …full priced greeting cards, I get stacks of them in thrift store for 1 .00, pads of paper I use full size paper that come in with my mail or envelops for scratch pads. also when I had a printer I would use the paper to print off things.

I love this site , learning so much thank you for sharing your knowledge

Hi terre,

Thanks. I should look into a dehyrater. What brand do you have? I think people have caught on around here and are scooping up those cards. I have not seen any in years. I make my own many times out of white stock and envelopes. I love that you use the junk mail for scratch pads. Hubby does use paper that had only been printed on one side to print off this newspaper puzzles every day.

You are welcome and we are all learning from you. Thanks.

I just use my air fryer for dehydrating. I have a full size tray, last night I did peppers, then this morning I did apples and bananas Also I have dried corn, blueberries, strawberry, tomatoes, oranges, watermelon, onions, carrots, celery. Then sometimes I make power out of the things I dry

Hi Precious! First of all, our gas/electric bill is 176.33 for this month. We are busy this week with getting some things cleared out. Our subdivision is having a neighborhood yard sale. We decided to have a “free sale”. We will put everything out and then ask for donations to the local food pantry. I ran our church’s yard sale for many years so am not interested in putting a lot of effort into pricing things. Plus, so many people gave us things when we had grandchildren, it is time to pass some of it along.

We are also having the girls for a sleepover on Saturday. And our new refrigerator will be coming that day also. We ended up getting a Whirlpool French door. No ice or water through the door, but it does have an ice maker. Wow, have appliances gotten expensive! Even ones made in the US. Our current fridge is still working but is close to 20 y/o so we decided to proactively replace. We have lived here 11 years now, so some of the appliances are starting to get older. We have already replaced the dishwasher and the stove was new when we moved, as was the washer. So next will be a dryer and a microwave. The microwave is original to the house, 30 years old. But it still works fine.

Hi Chris,

That was a better bill. I love that way to get rid of things. I will steal that idea for next year. Our town had the garage sales this past weekend.

Yes appliances are awfully expensive! You will love the French door. I have enjoyed mine for over 10 years now. Enjoy yours!

I hear you on appliances getting old. My dishwasher has the front panel ripping off. I have to baby it to get it to start. It is over 16 years old. So when it finally breaks we will just get a new one. We replaced the microwave a few years back. The washer and dryer 3 years ago. Hubby keeps our gas tove going by replacing parts.

I forgot to say another thing we are considering replacing proactively is our water heater. It was a year old when we moved into the house. Luckily a guy down the street has a plumbing business so we will use him when we do. I am thinking hubby may research the tankless kind also. We had used our neighbor’s company last year when we had the plumbing work done for the deduction meter and utility sink in the basement. They did a great job.
