When I was making taco salad on Wednesday, I realized that I had no taco seasoning. All of the expensive packets were gone. I was not about to run to the store for one item.
So I looked in my family cookbook for a recipe I had used a while ago. After I realized that I had all of the ingredients to make it, I found a glass container that I could make a bunch in. However not being sure if Hubby would like it or not, I just made a little batch.
Here is the recipe:
2 tsp. cumin
2 Tbsp. chili powder
1 and 1/2 tsp. of garlic powder
1/2 tsp. on onion powder
1 tsp. of dried oregano
3/4 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. salt
After you cook your meat, add 1 and 1/2 Tbsp. of this seasoning and about 2-3 Tbsp. of water. Adjust accordingly to how much meat you cook. This did 1 lb. for me. We ate 1/2 on salads and I froze the rest of the meat for another taco salad meal.
Hubby loved the seasoning. So I made a big jar of it which will last us quite a while. No more spending on those $1.00 packets!
Do you make your own taco seasoning?

NO, I don't make my own seasoning. I don't even keep the ingredients in my house, so that would be an expense. Plus, It takes me a long time to use a packet of seasoning since I use a fourth of the package each time.
Thanks for sharing!
Hi AD, this is Chris. Thanks for the taco seasoning recipe. I still have some of the big bottle we got at Costco, but will try this after it is gone. We have all those spices here also.
This one is especially tasty!
I've actually never used commercial taco seasoning, but I don't mix up my own either. I add the seasonings as I cook. I use all of what you listed except I don't use oregano or salt. I don't measure either… sometimes I feel like more garlic, sometimes more onion. If it's just for me I'll use more chili powder and also cayenne. I suppose if I mixed it up properly I would have a more uniform product, but this matches my 'style' of cooking – I just have to hope I never want to exactly recreate any dish!
Hi Rachel,
Thanks for sharing. You do what works for you. I add a lot of seasonings for different dishes as I cook but this one is one I am afraid to screw up so making it ahead works for me.
I made home made taco seasoning for all my granddaughters one Christmas. I wanted to give them something that they would remember me by – I'm 85 and still doing pretty well. The problem is, now they want it every Christmas. It can get rather expensive when you make it pint size but that's OK.
85 is young! My very best lifetime friend is 85! I am glad that you are in good shape. I love that your granddaughters love your taco seasoning. It's amazing that even though it is expensive that it doesn't matter for family.
