My Sale List For The Holidays

UPDATE FROM MY READERS: From Chris: A couple of things that go on sale here that you didn’t mention but I always buy this time of the year are canned tomatoes, canned beans for chili, and sometimes canned fruit.

MY POST: When I was taking inventory of my freezers and pantry, I was making a list of those things that I need to buy at the rock bottom prices during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. So many things go on sale this time of year at their cheapest prices. I have many of these things so I will just be filling in my gaps. I don’t have a lot of freezer room right now.

Let’s start with turkeys. Right now, Aldi’s has the premium Butterball turkeys on sale for $ 1.07 a lb. As of yesterday, they had limited them to 2. I bought an 18.51 lb. one last week. We roasted it on Sunday and had a complete turkey dinner on Sunday and Monday nights. We will eat it again tonight and pack the leftovers up with the food saver to put in the freezer. All of the bones and skin have been frozen to make soup over the winter.

Other stores will be putting their turkeys on sale in the next week or so. I don’t know yet what the prices will be but they will be at their cheapest prices of the year.

B.J.’s Warehouse Club has a deal for a free turkey. Spend $ 150. from 11/1-11/14 and get a digital coupon in your online account to use for the free one from 11/16-11/27. I also heard from my sister that you can get a free turkey at Weis if you spend $200. Neither of these deals will work for me. I do not have a Weis and I doubt I will need to spend that $ 150. on anything at B.J.’s. It will be cheaper for me to just buy the turkeys on sale. I tend to buy the Butterball’s because they are meatier birds and the meat is very tender. I can’t buy any other meat for $ 1.07 a lb. Perhaps, Walmart’s will be cheaper. I do not know at this point.

I will be stocking on stuffing cubes because we make stuffing through out the year with turkey, chicken, and pork. The cream soups will be cheap. I have plenty so will not buy any this year. I also use The Tightwad Gazette’s homemade recipe when I am in a pinch. Broth’s will also go on sale. I make my own chicken and vegetable broths. I do have beef bouillon cubes to flavor broth but I will get a few beef broths if they are at a good price to make beef barley soup this winter.

Aldi usually puts their butter on sale for about $ 2.69 a lb. I stock up even though they usually limit it to six. Any time I am near an Aldi, I stop in for butter. I buy what I need for the entire year which is around 30-36 lbs. It freezes well.

The other things that will be cheap is Stove Top stuffing, fresh potatoes, pickles and olives, fresh cranberries, canned cranberry sauce, frozen pies, canned pumpkin, canned green beans, canned corn, pie fillings, French fried onions, and celery.

Also sugar, flour, baking soda, cocoa, chocolate chips, evaporated and condensed milks will be on sale.

Hams seem to go on sale here before Christmas.

If I have missed anything be sure to leave a comment and I will add it to this post.

We will probably buy one more turkey and throw it in the freezer to use later. I will be buying some of the other things but not all because I have a good supply.

Hi Precious, this post is just great. I know I will be referring back to it in the next 2 mos. A couple of things that go on sale here that you didn’t mention but I always buy this time of the year are canned tomatoes, canned beans for chili, and sometimes canned fruit. Thanks for mentioning the TWG recipe for cream soups. I had forgotten about it.
